چکیده

UMTS transmitters in handsets, based on WCDMA, have to fulfill contradicting requirements. On the one hand, they should operate in a highly power efficient way because battery lifetime is a major consideration for handsets. For this purpose, the application of switchedmode RF power amplifiers seems to be advantageous. On the other hand, the spectral efficiency of the transmitted signal has to be very high. In order to fulfill these spectral requirements, non-constant envelope modulation schemes are necessary, for which linear RF power amplifiers seem to be optimal to meet the stringent Adjacent Channel Leakage Power Ratio (ACLR) specification. Switched-mode power amplifiers can be applied to a linear transmitter, using a pulse modulated signal. Since the non-constant envelope signal then has been converted into a pulse sequence in time domain, the amplification of the pulse signal will not necessarily be linear and the amplified pulse signal can be demodulated with a bandpass filter. This concept is however hard to be realized for frequencies in the GHz range. We propose a technique to drive a switched-mode power amplifier such that the desired linearly amplified signal can be obtained by an RF band-selection filter. The usefulness of this approach is investigated by high-level simulations. Results will be applied to optimize a UMTS transmitter architecture in order to combine high linearity and maximum power-addedefficiency (PAE). In this paper, a 7-level Diode Clamped Multilevel Inverter (DCMLI) is simulated with three different carrier PWM techniques. Here, Carrier based Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation (SPWM), Third Harmonic Injected Pulse Width Modulation (THIPWM) and Modified Carrier-Based Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) are used as modulation strategies. These modulation strategies include Phase Dispos...

General Performance of Amplitude Modulated PDM Transmitters for Digital Broadcasting using the IBOC System

This paper describes and discusses the results of tests carried out on two families of PDM (Pulse Duration Modulation) AM transmitters. A variety of tests have been done using two tone techniques to evaluate the transmitters for linearity. Testing was carried out both into a 50 ohm resistive load and into a bandpass load to simulate the effects of a limited bandwidth antenna as proposed by USA ...

Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation with Reduced Common Mode Voltage and Current Losses for Six-Phase Induction Motor Drive with Three-Level Inverter

Common-mode voltage (CMV) generated by the inverter causes motor bearing failures in multiphase drives. On the other hand, presence of undesired z-component currents in six-phase induction machine (SPIM) leads to extra current losses and have to be considered in pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques. In this paper, it is shown that the presence of z-component currents and CMV in six phase driv...
